So today, we are going to discuss what I was able to dig up on the Westland boat cover brand. We will begin by discussing the fact that they offer covers in two specific areas. These are what they reference as their “exact fit” and their “select fit” options. Basically, the exact fit is designed to meet the exact specifications and measurements of your boat. The intent of this boat cover seems to be to provide extra protection to your boat when you are storing it in the off season. It is intentionally designed to provide a custom fit specifically for your boat. As I have said before, this tight fit is great, especially when you are trying to keep the critters out. This is also similar to some of the other boat covers I have profiled in the past (Lund boat covers for example).

The other boat cover they offer is the select fit which is basically a semi-custom boat cover. This boat cover will still provide you with a degree of protection; it is just not as absolute as the exact fit. Those of you that are boating enthusiasts know how important the right fabrics are when you are sailing. You need fabric that is durable, water and weather resistant, and breathable. Many times boaters feel their choices are limited primarily to the use of vinyl type coverings simply because of its ability to stand up against the onslaught of the sea. I have frequently addressed the need for you to protect the investment that your boat represents, and I have harped on the fact that the best way to ensure continued pleasure from your boat is to make sure that you buy a boat cover that properly fits your specific boat. It doesn’t make any difference whether you are using paddle boat covers, Sea Ray boat covers, Hurricane boat covers or what have you, you just need to use the right product for your boat.

Today’s article is going to focus on the care and maintenance of the covers you have purchased to protect your boat. Just like the boat covers protect the investment, proper care and maintenance of the paddle boat covers (or Sea Ray covers) that you purchase will help you get the maximum mileage out of your boat.

Boat cover maintenance is very similar to maintaining anything else, you have to take time to ensure that it stays clean. Ideally, you should take the time to clean the boat covers prior to the build-up of dirt and grime. By being proactive in your maintenance of the cover, you will save yourself a ton of work later on. To clean these items it is recommended that you simply use a soft cloth (on the clear plastic parts of the Sea Ray boat cover) or a brush to remove any dirt or debris that may be present on the boat cover. Then, use a natural type soap solution to wash down the paddle boat cover, and then rinse with lukewarm water. Ideally, the temperature of the water used when washing the boat covers should not exceed 100 degrees. You need to make sure that the canvas is completely rinsed off, and dried before you store it. Some of the sites I have found, also highly recommend using cold water to rinse the boat cover if you are using it in an area with salt water. Furthermore, when storing the canvas, you should roll the cover as opposed to folding it. This will help maintain the life of the cover.

I addressed this topic briefly in an earlier post discussing paddle boat coverings, but I thought I would further expound on some of the options available to you as a boat owner. There are not only various styles of boat covers that are available, but there are also numerous materials that these covers can be made out of.

The type of material that you will want to use will depend on your climate, and the conditions in which your boat will be stored. Obviously, if your boat will be stored outside and will be unused for long periods of time, you will want a boat cover material that is extremely durable, maybe even a boat tarp. If you are an avid boater, and you have your boat in the water every chance you get, odds are that you can afford to go with a cover that is not quite as heavy as the boat tarp. Additionally, these lighter boat covers will afford you the opportunity to purchase custom paddle boat covers or custom Hurricane boat covers.

An initial review of the information available on the Internet shows that there are several fabric options when purchasing a paddle boat cover: cotton duck, double duck, and polyguard. The cotton duck material typically has some type of waterproofing agent applied to it, it is mildew resistant and UV resistant. This type of material is typically not suitable for trailering. Next is the double duck is a 50/50 polycotton blend and has the same characteristics as the cotton duck. However, the double duck is trailerable. Finally we have the polyguard. Polyguard is a lightweight acrylic coated polyester that is UV resistant, fade resistant, and strong. The material is water repellant, breathable, and mildew resistant. As you can tell from reading above, the polyguard is the way to go if you are looking for a top that you are going to take on and off frequently while pulling your boat down to the lake.

So far, the pages of this blog have been devoted to speaking with you about paddle boat covers and pedal boat covers. As the title of blog indicates, I fully plan on spending a fair amount of time covering the topics of Bimini Covers and Sunbrella boat covers. Today though, I wanted to start by talking a little bit about Lund boat covers.

In principle, Lund boat covers are really not very different from the paddle boat covers we have been discussing. Given the shape of the boats will be different, and the basic design of the cover will vary, but when it comes to prices and choices, the options are very similar. Just like with the paddle boat covers we discusses, you have the option of looking at a universal style boat cover, a semi-custom boat cover, or a full custom cover. It is no surprise that the primary difference between these three types of covers is price and fit. As I spent some time looking around the web, the material and fabric selection for covers is very similar. I guess the upside to this is that if you are a boating enthusiast and have other boats, you may be able to get matching or color coordinated covers.

So, if you are going to spend any time online looking for a good boat cover, you are going to need to spend some time on the Internet doing your research. I did find one site called boatcovers.info that had a fair selection of products and styles. You may want to check them out if you are having a hard time finding information on your own. The bottom line to shopping for boat covers on the Internet is that you have to exercise caution when making purchases, much like you would when making purchases face to face. Take your time, research the company, see if there are any complaints on file, check the Internet to see if there are any complaints about their customer service.

You have a paddle boat and you love it, but you need to protect it. The first step in your preventative maintenance regimen should be purchasing a cover for your paddle boat that will protect it from the elements. As I addressed in the last post, it is possible to buy a universal boat cover that will save you a little money in the short run, but over the duration of your paddle boat’s life, this generic cover will not fit protect your boat as well as a cover that is specifically designed for paddleboats.

When considering the purchase of a custom paddle boat cover, you need to look at the measurements of your boat. If you have never done this before, here is how. First, you need to take the measurement from the front of the boat to the back along the centerline (middle) of the underside of the boat. Once you have that measurement, you will go to the widest part of the boat (beam) and take its measurement from one side of the boat to the other on the underside of the boat. Again, these measurements are critical because they will help you order the boat cover that is right for your specific boat.

Once you have the measurements, you will need to make a decision about the fabric that you intend to use. I have found companies that make the covers out of canvas, polyester, and a cotton polyester blend. The type of fabric that you choose will depend on the climate of your location. Where I live, it is very hot and very dry, therefore I tend to lean towards a canvas that is heartier and holds up better against the UV rays from the sun. The color of your paddle boat cover will be purely a function of your own taste. Again, I tend towards a light color to help reflect some of the Sun’s energy.

I have found paddle boat cover manufacturers online that offer a whole host of extras with their covers. One site I found offers adjustable shock cord, double seams, no raw edges, rot and mildew proof threads, heavy duty web tie down loops and more. The thing to keep in mind is that the cost of the boat cover will vary based on the options you select when putting your order together. I would encourage you to spend a little time online and research the different paddle boat cover sellers and evaluate what they are selling. See if you can find reviews on their product quality and service.

Paddle boats provide a great deal of inexpensive entertainment to people every year.  These little pieces of fun are easy enough to use, and young and old enjoy them.  In order to ensure that your paddle boat continues to provide you with fun for a long time, you need to make sure that it is maintained properly.

This maintenance begins with finding a paddle boat cover that will provide your boat with the right amount of protection.  As with most any type of cover of boating accessory, you can pick up a boating cover that is either specifically designed for your boat, or you can spend some time online and see if you can find a generic, one size fits all boat cover.

Personally, I would recommend the custom fitted paddleboat cover.  The reason for this is simple, if you invest a little bit extra in a custom cover, you can be certain that it will fit properly, and protect the investment you have made in your paddle boat.

The primary factor you will need to consider when making your decision to go with either a custom or semi-custom paddle boat cover will be price.  It seems like this is almost always the determining factor.  The price difference (depending on brand) is not extreme.  I have seen some custom paddle boat covers that are right around the $200 mark, and some semi-custom paddle boat covers that will cost right around $140.  It comes back to what you want.

If you decide that you want to go the custom boat routs, you will need to take the customary measurements of your boat and provide them with the boat cover manufacturer you decide to use.  Again this comes back to preference.  Regardless of whether you choose to use a Bass Pro cover, a Subsea systems cover or a Taylor Made cover, each will require precise measurements, and probably a down payment.  You can find information about these various vendors on the Internet.
